This is a great little bit about how revitalizing a family hike in the fall can be — enjoy!
Chickfriendly.net October 2010 Contribution Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:16 pm Comments (0)I (Bridget) posted a note on One Child, One Planet‘s Facebook fan page the other day. On a routine shopping trip to Costco with my 5-year-old, Audrey, we found one of our favorite snacks, Sun Chips in a 100% compostable bag — made of 90% plant material. How cool! We love composting, and we love chips. Happy marriage.
A few Facebook people “liked” it, but one concerned citizen wrote: Are the ingredients the result of monoculture agricultural practices that damage the soil? Is the corn genetically modified (and therefore a threat to the earth’s natural biodiversity) and how are Costco’s labor practices and effects on local retailers impacting quality of life for people in your community or those laboring in farm fields elsewhere?
Thank you for pointing those things out. I applaud the many people who can research each and every one of those points before making a purchase. I would love for you to share your knowledge by sending in comments based on proven fact. It will help us all in the long run.
When I share something exciting, like a compostable package, with all of you, it is because — in my world — as a working mother with 4 busy kids — it’s worth sharing. One Child, One Planet was created because I wanted every-day, ordinary people to know that each and every one of our actions counts. For me, that day, I was just thrilled that the chip bags were biodegradable, at last! I have no idea if the corn was genetically modified, but I sure hope so. Maybe some day we won’t even have to worry about that, because the right way will be the norm.
On that same day full of errands, we found an abandoned plastic water bottle near our car as we were leaving someplace. I said to her, “Let’s take this home. Someone forgot to put this in the recycle bin.” As we left our final destination for the day, Costco, Audrey found a big empty cardboard box left behind in a shopping cart, and of course, wanted to take it home to recycle. I smiled inside as we loaded that into our car too, imagining that she has already learned an important lesson, and is going to keep me very busy all over town. Mission accomplished, by every-day kind of people.

Tools for adults to sort through children’s books. Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 8:52 am Comments (0) Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:45 pm Comments (0)As there have been some unusual weather patterns this winter, this video is a good reminder that weather and climate are not the same thing. In Michigan, we’ve had little snow, and not as frigid as usual. We also had a later start to winter — a rainy Christmas, and then winter arrived. Something to think about…

One Child, One Planet: Inspiration for the Young Conservationist by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Children of all ages will be captivated by this loving tribute to Mother Earth, her gifts and her greatest concerns. Young or old, everyone’s actions make a difference. Loose-rhyming text and awe-inspiring photography are woven into a family treasure that will create excitement and responsibility toward the planet.
This may or may not come as a surprise, but with five children, a husband and a dog sharing a roof with me, I get a little more excited than most about taking a business trip. A smile starts from somewhere deep down inside, and radiates enthusiasm as I pack, stock the fridge for the family, and go on my merry way.
This weekend it was my pleasure to travel to Northern Michigan for signings at the quaint and cozy Horizons Books in Traverse City and Petoskey. (Beautiful and well-stocked book stores with great coffee to boot!) It was a wonderful escape from the blustery chill of the metro-Detroit area. Northern Michigan just had a generous snowfall, closing schools and businesses for the few days before my arrival. Having grown-up in Buffalo, I’m right at home when I see snow-covered trees. It was the perfect setting to do a little holiday shopping. A LOT of shopping actually, I’ve hardly begun!
With Christmas less than two weeks away, I’m ready to buckle-down, slow-down, and enjoy the remainder of this magical season. The ages of our children this year are 12, 10, 6, 6 and 4. For our nephew, this will be his first Christmas spent with a large family (of girls, no less — he’s in for a treat). As the kids get older, and have their own schedules to add to ours, it gets increasingly difficult to get everyone available at the same time to do something as simple (and important, says Mom) as decorate the tree. We still have time, right?
The shopping has been a real challenge this year. In the spirit of de-cluttering and simplifying life (goal #1), it’s so hard to buy something that I know will be soon strewn across the basement floor. Still looking for that perfect gift, that does more than take up space…. hope you find it.
Wishing you a wonderful season that will inspire you and your children to live in the moment, enjoy some time with nature, and renew your commitment to preserving Earth’s treasures. And for you busy mothers, wishing you a business trip soon. =)
Have Book, Will Travel Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:30 pm Comments (0)Wow! That has to be the first word in the One Child, One Planet blog. This book has been two years in the making, and it is a great feeling to have the finish line within sight. Conservation is not a fad, it is a lifestyle, and a wonderful seed to plant in the minds of our children.
I did a lot of research in writing this book, and I know that the climate change that we are witnessing can be explained in a few ways. Whether it is global warming, or a natural fluctuation of the Earth’s temperature — we may never know for sure in our lifetimes. A few things are certain, though. We want clean water and air. We want to replenish our forests and protect our rainforests. We want to protect all species and keep balance in the food chain. We need to conserve precious resources. We love our children, and want to provide a safe, clean and happy environment for their children’s children……and so on. I hope this book will generate discussions about important topics. Though we may view the world a little differently, we are all on the same team.
I hope that this book wows and inspires you.
The world’s been waiting for you,
Bridget
